New Sunday market for Shannon

New Sunday market for Shannon

By KAREN GAZLEY - Horowhenua Mail Last updated 13:57 03/05/2010

A new village market in Shannon is tipped to boost trading and business growth, while giving the public good reason to stop and shop on Sundays.

Shannon Village Market will feature more than 20 stalls, with a mix of local and district stallholders offering a range of products, from farmers produce, to plants, cut flowers, baking, jams and arts and crafts.

Organiser David Blackett said he wanted a good selection of quality products.

He also wants to set aside an area each week for a local charity, school or fundraising group to run a sausage sizzle.

Mr Blackett said there are about eight markets between Wellington and Palmerston North that have been around for a while, but the trend is for people to shop in markets where prices are cheaper and produce is fresher.

Most are open only on Saturdays, and farmers markets sell only primary produce, fruit and vegetables, but no arts and crafts.

Being on Sunday meant it would not conflict with other major markets, or Saturday junior sport. It was also timely for members of about five churches in the area to call in after their services, he said.

The market will be held at Te Marie Park, opposite the Club Hotel, from 9am till 2pm, starting June 6. Stalls cost $35, or $20 per community table.

Marketing the Market

Mr Blackett said in an interview today that he had spoken to at least five media organisations. He said all would carry stories to promote the Market in the next week. He believed articles had already appeared in the Manawatu Evening Standard and the Horowhenua Mail and expected further artilces to appear in The Tribune, and The Horowhenua Chronicle.

Mr Blackett said he was pleased to have the support from the media. We are all working together towards the further economic development of Shannon, and it's growth the Manawatu Horowhenua area.
